The Callieach
Celtic Guardian of winter, storms, snow and cold.
Associated with winter, The Callieach is the bringer of storms, the sculptor of mountains, and a figure of both reverence and fear. She is the personification of the spirit-power of the land, protector of animals and a goddess of grain, a key resource for surviving winter.
Representing the Celtic understanding of the balance between opposing forces: light and dark, creation and destruction, winter and spring, the Cailleach, while formidable, is not wholly malevolent. She is a necessary force, a reminder of nature’s power
and the inevitability of change. Owls, seen as guides to the underworld, heralding death, renewal and wisdom, symbolise this side of the Callieachs’ nature.
Sterling silver engraved pendant of a barn Owl in flight on a trace chain approx 45x20mm. Total length approx 17 inches.
